Introducing Italy’s Zoom Drums
Is Italy’s latest drum export the ultimate in sonic versatility or an exercise in drum tone obliteration? Check out Zoom Drums’ collapsible drums.
First prize for the most unique stand at Musikmesse must go to Italian newbies Zoom Drum this year. Their booth had been converted into a giant snare drum, a cutaway allowing us inside to check out their unique product. The product in question is a bass drum and floor tom which can be collapsed (zoomed in or out, hence the clever name) to offer the player a variety of drum depths.
The bass drum is divided into three shells allowing it to be closed down to a third of its natural size, the floor tom is split into two shells. The collapsing is achievable via a well-crafted, light-alloy hinge-mechanism.
Zoom Drums claim that each drum offers 1024 different sonic possibilities. On paper it’s a great idea for recording drummers who perhaps can’t afford an array of gear, but unfortunately it was a look don’t touch scenario so we’ll have to get back to you on whether it actually works or not…
